Switzerland is a country famous for its snowy peaks, popular ski resorts, authentic cheese fondues and chocolates shaped like the Matterhorn peak. But did you know that the Swiss also make great wines? It’s not very surprising considering that it’s surrounded by countries popular for their wines. There’s France to the west, Italy to the south and Germany to the north. And one of the most famous wine regions in Switzerland is the Lavaux which is located in Lake Geneva (Lac Léman) region between Lausanne and Montreux.
The Lavaux Vineyard
The Lavaux vineyard region covers 800 hectares which makes it the largest contiguous vineyard area in Switzerland. The Benedictine monks started the wine industry in this region in the 11th century. And until now wines in Lavaux are still made much as they were done in the old times. For this reason, the Lavaux vineyard terraces earned a UNESCO World Heritage distinction since 2007.
The most common grape in the region is Chasselas which produces white wines. There are also some reds which are made from Pinot Noir or Gamay grapes. Grapes are still harvested by hand from the Lavaux vineyards. Therefore, the wine produced is only in small batches each year. This makes it difficult to export the wine outside the region. The only way to taste Swiss wine is to do it in Switzerland!
